Jeff believes that every child deserves a great education. This is deeply personal to Jeff: all three of his children attend Montgomery County Public Schools just like he did. As State Senator, Jeff has fought to keep our public schools strong.

Jeff's Plan:

​

  • Close the achievement gap by reducing class size and increasing school funding to ensure that all students, regardless of zip code or family income, can get a high-quality education.

  • Pay teachers fairly so they can spend their time and effort focusing on what's important--equipping our kids for success in the 21st century.

  • Listen closely to parents, who deserve a responsive and helpful school system.

  • Invest in The Blueprint for Maryland’s Future, our state’s once-in-a-generation education reform package.

  • Protect our students by advocating for commonsense gun reform and opposing any efforts to arm teachers in Maryland.

As a husband, father, and proud progressive, Jeff believes we must crack down on gun violence.  As State Senator, he's shown a  relentless commitment to our shared values, including commonsense gun safety reforms.

Jeff's Record of Achievement:

  • Received "Gun Sense Candidate of Distinction" by Moms Demand Action (2018)

  • Banned "bump stocks," which turn guns into automatic weapons

  • Passed "red flag" legislation, to ensure that folks who are a threat to themselves or others can't obtain guns

  • Stopped convicted domestic abusers from being able to own a gun

  • Co-sponsor of legislation to ban “ghost guns,” which are wreaking havoc in Montgomery County

Jeff believes in racial justice and reforming our criminal justice system. As Vice Chair of the powerful Judicial Proceedings Committee, Jeff is a recognized leader in ensuring our justice system is fair and equitable.

Jeff's Record of Achievement:

  • Passed bold legislation to provide Marylanders with a second chance by automatically clearing their criminal records of minor offenses

  • Fought for re-entry services for formerly incarcerated Marylanders

  • Helped lead the charge to pass the Justice Reinvestment Act, Maryland’s historic criminal justice reform legislation

  • Voted to decriminalize personal amounts of cannabis
